To some, morngingglories are vibrant vines in a garden. To corn and soybean farmers, they’re problematic weeds that can significantly impact yield potential. These weeds can be detrimental even when populations are small; a single morningglory plant per foot of row has the potential to reduce soybean yield by up to 50%.1
Morningglories are unique because the leaves are either heart-shaped or lobe-shaped, ranging from 2 to 5 inches in length and 1.5 to 4 inches in width. They also have an impenetrable seed coat and large seed size, which make them harder to control with preemergence herbicides. Additionally, glyphosate has traditionally struggled to control large morningglories, making the weed makes them even more difficult to eliminate. However, farmers have options to combat these annual weeds. Here are things they need to know:
A program approach to weed control, including cultural practices and herbicides with multiple modes of action, is crucial to controlling morningglory populations. Cultural practices can help crops outcompete morningglories and improve the consistency of the herbicide program. Examples include:
Farmers should also consider a fall or spring burndown herbicide application to help control morninglory species, depending on where they farm. Farmers can then follow with a preemergence herbicide application. Resicore® REV corn herbicide helps fields start and stay strong with three proven active ingredients. For soybeans, Sonic® Boom herbicide or Kyber® Pro herbicide are hardworking options that offer farmers long-lasting residual weed control. Enlist® herbicides also provide season-long control of morningglories, as well as more than 90 other tough weeds, for crops with the Enlist® trait.
Farmers should scout fields 10 to 14 days after initial applications. If morningglories escape the initial control or emerge after the postemergence application, a second pass may be needed.

The transgenic soybean event in Enlist E3® soybeans is jointly developed and owned by Corteva Agriscience and M.S. Technologies L.L.C. Following burndown, Enlist Duo® and Enlist One® herbicides with Colex-D® technology are the only herbicides containing 2,4-D that are authorized for preemergence and postemergence use with Enlist® crops. Consult Enlist® herbicide labels for weed species controlled. Enlist Duo and Enlist One herbicides are not registered for use or sale in all states and counties; are not registered in AK, CA, CT, HI, ID, MA, ME, MT, NH, NV, OR, RI, UT, VT, WA and WY; and have additional subcounty restrictions in AL, GA, TN and TX, while existing county restrictions still remain in FL. All users must check “Bulletins Live! Two” no earlier than six months before using Enlist One or Enlist Duo. To obtain “Bulletins,” consult epa.gov/espp/, call 1-844-447-3813, or email ESPP@epa.gov. You must use the “Bulletin” valid for the month and state and county in which Enlist One or Enlist Duo are being applied. Contact your state pesticide regulatory agency if you have questions about the registration status of Enlist® herbicides in your area. ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW PESTICIDE LABEL DIRECTIONS. IT IS A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL AND STATE LAW TO USE ANY PESTICIDE PRODUCT OTHER THAN IN ACCORDANCE WITH ITS LABELING. ONLY USE FORMULATIONS THAT ARE SPECIFICALLY LABELED FOR SUCH USE IN THE STATE OF APPLICATION. USE OF PESTICIDE PRODUCTS, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, 2,4-D-CONTAINING PRODUCTS NOT AUTHORIZED FOR USE WITH ENLIST CROPS, MAY RESULT IN OFF-TARGET DAMAGE TO SENSITIVE CROPS/AREAS AND/OR SUSCEPTIBLE PLANTS, IN ADDITION TO CIVIL AND/OR CRIMINAL PENALTIES. Additional product-specific stewardship requirements for Enlist crops, including the Enlist Product Use Guide, can be found at www.traitstewardship.com. Kyber® Pro, Resicore® REV and Sonic® Boom are not registered for sale or use in all states. Resicore REV is not available for sale, distribution or use in Nassau and Suffolk counties in the state of New York. Contact your state pesticide regulatory agency to determine if a product is registered for sale or use in your state. Consult the label before purchase or use for full details. Always read and follow label directions.
