HighNoon® Herbicide: The Foundation of Rangeland Restoration

Weed control in the West has traditionally involved a compromise between factors like the spectrum of control, product formulation, mixability, and use site or grazing restrictions. While proven, long-established products, such as Milestone® herbicide, continue to play critical roles in rangeland weed control, Corteva Agriscience recognizes that ranchers, land managers, and applicators may be looking for weed control that offers a broader control spectrum, is easy and convenient to use, and carries reduced risk.

“The Western region is unique in that there are a lot of crossover use sites,” says Jerome Otto, market development specialist with Corteva Agriscience. “So, in the past, products were typically aligned to specific use sites like pastures, roadsides, or rights-of-way. We wanted customers to be able to use a single product, whether they’re treating rangeland or a roadside. We needed that product to control a broad range of invasive and noxious grasses, weeds, and brush, and to be labeled for use on a wide range of sites, including pastures.”

HighNoon® herbicide is THE foundation product for control of annual grasses, broadleaf weeds, and brush in Western rangelands, as well as non-grazed use sites.

It would be a tall order for any other product, but for HighNoon® herbicide from Corteva Agriscience, it’s business as usual. HighNoon combines two powerful active ingredients: aminopyralid, the active ingredient in Milestone herbicide; and Rinskor® active. Both have been designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as reduced-risk pesticides; together, they create a foundation weed control product that’s easy to use, easy on perennial grasses, and effective against key annual grasses and broadleaf weed species.

“Aminopyralid has been a key product in Western noxious weed control for years,” says Will Hatler, field scientist with Corteva Agriscience. “It’s well-known and highly effective on a broad range of weeds, so it’s been the foundation for a lot of programs. With the addition of Rinskor, we’ve improved a hard-to-improve herbicide. Now there are over 140 weeds on that label. The two active ingredients are complementary, especially on key Western species like Canada thistle, poison hemlock, and others.”

Easy to Use Weed Control for Multiple Sites

There are benefits beyond just the spectrum of control. The unique combination of active ingredients simplifies control of invasive grasses and broadleaf weeds while offering ranchers, land managers, and their applicators a single product for use across a variety of sites and against some of the most troublesome weeds in the West.

HighNoon® herbicide has no grazing restrictions and offers the ability to spray up to the water’s edge. HighNoon has low toxicity toward pollinators, soil-dwelling organisms, and most desirable aquatic species.

“We know Rinskor has an additive effect on the products it’s mixed with; it strengthens the other active ingredient,” Hatler says. “It has strong residual, which is very important in the West. This is a low-odor product. It contains no 2,4-D, and it’s nonvolatile, so it won’t move from where it’s applied. It’s nonrestricted use. There are no grazing restrictions. It’s safe on grass. All these things are important for Western rangeland managers.”

HighNoon can be broadcast by ground or air, can be applied postemergence as a broadcast or spot application, and mixes easily with liquid UAN. Labeled use sites include rangeland, permanent grass pastures, and hay acres, Conservation Reserve Program acres, rights-of-way, and noncropland acres. In addition, HighNoon can control certain invasive winter annual grasses, making it a perfect partner in a traditional annual grass control program.

A Commitment to Rangeland Stewardship

“We call it foundational for a reason,” Hatler says. “HighNoon should be a part of any noxious weed management program in the West. It has activity on a number of broadleaf weeds. It has great woody plant activity, so it’s good for brush control on rangeland and noncrop areas. For applicators who are going across multiple use sites, there is rate flexibility for noncrop areas. It’s a very versatile tool for any Western land manager.”

HighNoon herbicide affirms the commitment of Corteva Agriscience to providing ranchers and land managers the tools they need to improve the productivity of the land and preserve those acres for generations to come.

“We know our customers are all about stewardship,” Otto says. “They want to see native plants and animals thrive. They want to improve biodiversity by eliminating invasive or noxious weeds. They’re committed to fire prevention and to controlling those plant species that contribute to the spread of wildfire. We’re proud to offer a single product such as HighNoon that helps achieve all those stewardship goals.”

Under normal field conditions, HighNoon® is nonvolatile. HighNoon and Milestone® have no grazing or haying restrictions for any class of livestock, including lactating dairy cows, horses (including lactating mares) and meat animals prior to slaughter. Label precautions apply to forage treated with HighNoon or Milestone and to manure and urine from animals that have consumed treated forage. HighNoon and Milestone are not registered for sale or use in all states. Contact your state pesticide regulatory agency to determine if a product is registered for sale or use in your state. Consult the label for full details. Rinskor® is a registered active ingredient. Always read and follow label directions.
