Reporting Adverse Effects

Corteva is vigilant in reporting adverse effects in compliance with United States federal and international laws and regulations.

Adverse Effects

As a pesticide registrant, Corteva is responsible for reporting to United States EPA any allegation of adverse effects to human health or the environment resulting from alleged exposure to Corteva pesticide products.  In addition to reporting to USEPA (and several states), similar reporting is required by several other geographies, including France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and other EU countries.

In the United States, the Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) is the statute that regulates pesticides in the United States and gives registrants the permission to sell these products.

Section 6(a)(2) of the FIFRA states: “If at any time after the registration of a pesticide the registrant has additional factual information regarding unreasonable adverse effects on the environment of the pesticide, he shall submit such information to the Administrator.”

What is an adverse effect?

An adverse effect is any negative impact on the health and well-being of an organism (human, plant or animal), or the environment. This can range from immediate acute symptoms that develop rapidly and subside after exposure ends, such as skin irritation or nausea to chronic symptoms that develop slowly or due to persistent exposure over longer periods of time.

If you receive an allegation of an adverse effect, evaluate the reportability using the scenarios below as examples. This list doesn’t cover all scenarios. In the event of an emergency, first refer to the First Aid section of the product label and connect with emergency services, as needed.

Examples of adverse effects include:

  • Direct application of product onto field causing yellowing leaves and crop death.
  • Dermal exposure during product use causing irritation and itching of the skin.
  • Accidental or intentional ingestion of a product resulting in nausea and vomiting.
  • Spray drift during application of product near bee colony resulting in decrease in bee population.
  • Property damage caused by product such as fire or explosion.
  • Product spilled from original container into flower pot causing yellowing leaves and flower death.
  • Product detected in water at levels greater than criteria for ambient water quality
